Energy  Efficiency and Capricorn 151 Homes

Our homes have achieved a        5 star rating as standard and each new home is supplied with an independent rating by a independent energy efficiency expert as part of our service

Most local authorities throughout Australia now require and energy efficiency rating to be carried out on each new home. The average Australian household produces about 20% of Australia's greenhouse gas emission. Most of this energy is consumed in heating and cooling to maintain a comfortable thermal ambience year round. This can be achieved without major lifestyle changes by good simple design features.

The rating system is similar to the star rating on electrical appliances with "0" being the most inefficient to "5" being the highest rating. In addition to the above being taken into consideration in calculating the efficiency of a house, the type of hot water services, floor coverings and window furnishings also play a major role.

The Energy Rating label enables consumers to compare the energy efficiency of domestic appliances on a fair and equitable basis. It also provides incentive for manufacturers to improve the energy performance of appliances.

The Energy Rating Label was first introduced in 1986 in NSW and Victoria. It is now mandatory in all states and territories for refrigerators, freezer, clothes washers, clothes dryers, dishwashers and air-conditioners (single phase only) to carry the label when they are offered for sale. Three phase air conditioners may carry an energy label if the suppliers chooses to apply for one.

The Energy Rating Label has two main features:

star rating gives a quick comparative assessment of the model's energy efficiency

The comparative energy consumption (usually kilowatt hours/year) provides an estimate of the annual energy consumption of the appliance based on the tested energy consumption and information about the typical use of the appliance in the home. Air conditioners show the power consumption of the appliance (kW or kWh/hour).

The Star Rating of an appliance is determined from the energy consumption and size of the product. These values are measured under Australian Standards which define test procedures for measuring energy consumption and minimum energy performance criteria. Appliances must meet these criteria before they can be granted an Energy Rating Label.

Regulations require certain products to carry an energy label when offered for sale in Australia. All regulated products (for energy labelling or MEPS) must have their details registered with government. The technical requirements for energy labels are specified in the relevant Australian Standard and it is advisable to consult these when preparing label artwork. A copy of the proposed label must be submitted when registering a product.

The sample labels in EPS format on this page can be edited using most common advanced graphics programs to include the correct star rating, brand and model details, energy consumption and other details required on the label. The labels provided are in the colours, fonts and proportions as specified in the relevant Australian Standard. In all cases, registrants are responsible for ensuring that any labels prepared and submitted comply with the specifications in the relevant standard.
